To determine whether a claim is true or false, your best bet might not be to investigate the source, but rather to go out and find the best source you can on this topic, or, just as importantly, to scan multiple sources and see what the expert consensus seems to be.
Quick checks for other reporting - the case of celebrity deaths
Consider a report that "Keanu Reeves is dead."
Is it true? If it was, we'd expect there to be lots of news stories about it. So we check Google.
What do we find?
What about, "MMA boxer Maxim Dadashev is dead."
