Meeting Native Americans

As the early explorers and settlers moved west, they encountered numerous tribes of Native Americans. This section of the digital exhibit highlights scenes of Native Americans in their natural environment, as they live, hunt and pray in their tribal communities. (For scenes of missionary work with Native Americans, please see the Christians and Catholics section. For maps emphasizing Native American tribal gatherings, please see the Mapping North America section.) The Mallet Collection features several first-person narrative accounts from European and American explorers who lived with and among the Native Americans, studying their culture and communities. The engravings and lithographs in these pieces offer a fascinating glimpse into a past era and a disappearing culture.
