Graduate Studies: Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Guide to assist Graduate Studies students in finding resources to complete assignments and perform research in their discipline area.

Basic Information about Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is one of the most important library services available to you because it allows you to borrow from libraries across the globe. In order to request interlibrary loan materials, please create an account through the link in the box below.

For scans of articles or book chapters, you will be notified via email when the item arrives. You can access these items through your interlibrary loan account for a set period of time. During this time, you can download or print the requested item.

For physical requests like books, you will receive an email when the item has arrived and available to pick up at the front desk. If you are unable to be on campus to pick up the item, reach out to library@assumption.edu for assistance.

Request Books and Articles From Other Libraries

If we don't own a particular book or journal article, we can order it for you through Interlibrary Loan.

Books
Books can take up to 2 weeks to arrive at our library, so be sure to do your research early.

Articles
Journal articles tend to arrive quicker, usually in 1-3 business days.

Some of our databases provide full-text articles (indicated by a PDF or HTML link after the citation).  Others only show you the titles of articles.  For these, click Article Linker to find out whether we own the journal in print and/or online.  Note the year of the journal article and make sure we own the year you need!

This works the same way for articles too!

What Can I Borrow?

You can borrow books, articles, chapters of books, essays, videos, and more.

Keep in mind that it's often more difficult to borrow resources like dissertations or eBooks

How long can I keep it? Can I renew this?

Since each lending institution decides an item's borrowing period, renewals are often not an option.

How do I return my ILLs?

If you've received an electronic item, there is no need to return or notify us.

If you are returning a book from ILL and you live in MA, you can drop the item off at any library and it will be returned to us (provided the ILL paper sleeve is intact).

If you live outside of MA and need to return a book, you need to use your local post office or FEDEx service to return the item at your cost to:
