Scope & Content:

The Cable Club of Fitchburg Archives consists primarily of minutes and meeting records documenting its operations from 1935 through 1979. The latest records found in the collection are membership applications from 1981. Since there is very little known about the Cable Club of Fitchburg and there are no records past 1981, the motivation behind the 1987 decision to dissolve the club remains unclear.

In addition to minutes and meeting records, organizational documents such as financial reports, correspondence, and lists of members and officers are also present. Activity records include requests for donations, fundraising, flyers, event records, and advertisements.

Prominent Franco-American figures involved with the Cable Club of Fitchburg include William Aubuchon, Sr. and William Aubuchon, Jr., the latter of whom served as the club’s president in 1949. Some documents feature Aubuchon Hardware logo stickers in addition to letterheads. Aubuchon Jr., was heavily involved with the club, and as such the archives contain correspondence from him pertaining to club activities.

Organization: The records of the Cable Club are organized into two series:

Series 1. Minutes and Meetings

Series 2.  Other Organizational Documents

Usage Policy

For reasons of preservation, French Institute collection materials do not circulate; however, non-rare materials are allowed to circulate through the d’Alzon Library or inter-library loan with the director’s permission.

It should be noted that the Institute’s collection includes a number of Franco-American newspapers from the New England region. Most consist of bound copies and nearly all have been microfilmed. To preserve the bound volumes, the Institute encourages scholars to consult the microfilm copies whenever they are available, for example, at the American Antiquarian Society or the Boston Public Library.
