French Institute: Dubé Family Collection

Dubé Family Collection

Dubé Family Collection

Title: Dubé Family Collection

Dates: c. 1890s-2024

Scope and Content: This collection is comprised mainly of 196 photographs of various Dubé family members, from the 1890s-1940s. The collection includes tintypes, cabinet cards, real picture postcards, and other various photographic types. The bulk of the collection are images captured in photograph studios, mainly in Maine and New Hampshire.

The collection visually documents members of the Dubé family, specifically the siblings Odilon, Philias, Adelard, Cleophas, Philomene, Cyrice, Dominique, Hermel, and Alfred. These siblings immigrated to the Rollinsford, NH/South Berwick, ME area in the late 19th century. Only Philias Dubé returned north. Images in the collection largely depict the immigrant Dubé siblings, their wives, and their children. Extended family members are also represented, including images of the Parent, Belanger, Caron, and LePage families.  The images largely represent key moments in their life, including marriages, births, and First Communions. Interestingly, the collection also documents the professional life of the family, with images of their various grocery-related businesses on the New Hampshire/Maine border.

Related Material: The Old Berwick Historical Society in South Berwick, Maine, also has a Dubé Family Colletion. There is much crossover between the two collections. The Union Saint-Jean-Baptiste Collection at the French Institute holds records of select Dubé family members’ involvement with the organization, particularly at the local level.

Arrangement: Due to the size of the collection, there is only one series.

Restrictions: The collection is available to researchers and other interested parties. Permission for use or reproduction can be obtained from the director of the French Institute, and is subject to the Institute’s user policies.

Preferred Citation: Dubé Family Collection, French Institute, Assumption University

Processing Information: Processed by Kate Bradley, winter 2023-2024.

Provenance/Source of Acquisition: The Dubé Family Collection was created by Philias Dubé, his siblings, and his descendants over the span of multiple decades. Eventually the collection was forgotten until relocated by Bruno Dubé, Philias’ grandson, while going through a family home. The project Trois siècles de migrations francophones en Amérique du Nord (1640-1940) purchased the collection from Bruno Dubé, and then donated it to the French Institute.

Usage Policy

For reasons of preservation, French Institute collection materials do not circulate; however, non-rare materials are allowed to circulate through the d’Alzon Library or inter-library loan with the director’s permission.

It should be noted that the Institute’s collection includes a number of Franco-American newspapers from the New England region. Most consist of bound copies and nearly all have been microfilmed. To preserve the bound volumes, the Institute encourages scholars to consult the microfilm copies whenever they are available, for example, at the American Antiquarian Society or the Boston Public Library.
