In 1985, Robert Cornevin of France’s Académie des Sciences d’Outre-Mer (Overseas Academy of Sciences) asked the French Institute to create a dictionary of Franco-American authors as part of its series on Francophone authors throughout the world. This Dictionary of Franco-American Authors Writing in French initially consisted of bio-bibliographies of 65 deceased authors, but it has since grown to 103, including a dozen living authors. Because it concentrates on French, it does not discuss the many and often better-known Franco-American writers who have published exclusively in English, for example, Jack Kerouac (whose French writings remained in manuscript during his lifetime), Grace Metalious, or David Plante. As used in this dictionary, the term Franco-American refers to people of French-Canadian or Acadian birth or ancestry living in the Northeastern United States, where the term originated in the 1880s. Thus, the dictionary does not cover French literary production from the so-called American Creole Crescent, from the Great Lakes to Louisiana.
Entries follow a common format: a short biography of each author, followed by a list of her or his French-language works, and bibliographical references where available. Initially written in French, they are currently being translated into English by translation students at Salem State College, under the supervision of Professor Elizabeth Blood. English translations will be added as they become available.

En 1985, Robert Cornevin de l’Académie des Sciences d’Outre-Mer en France a demandé à l’Institut français de créer un dictionnaire des auteurs franco-américains pour sa série sur les auteurs francophones à travers le monde. Ce Dictionnaire des auteurs franco-américains de langue française consistait à l’origine de bio-bibliographies de 65 auteurs décédés pour s’élever éventuellement à 103, y compris une douzaine d’auteurs vivants. Parce que centré sur le français, il ne parle pas des nombreux écrivains franco-américains qui ont publié exclusivement en anglais et qui sont souvent mieux connus, tels Jack Kerouac (dont les écrits français sont restés inédits de son vivant), Grace Metalious ou David Plante. Tel qu’il est utilisé dans ce dictionnaire, le terme franco-américain se réfère à des personnes de naissance ou d’ascendance canadienne-française ou acadienne vivant dans le Nord-est des États-Unis, où le terme a été inventé pendant les années 1880. Donc, le dictionnaire n’inclut pas la production littéraire française du soi-disant Croissant créole américain s’étendant des Grands Lacs jusqu’en Louisiane.
Les entrées du dictionnaire suivent un format commun : une courte biographie de chaque auteur, suivie d’une liste de ses écrits en langue française et autant que possible de références bibliographiques. Écrites uniquement en français au début, elles sont en train d’être traduites en anglais par les étudiants en traduction de Salem State University, sous la supervision de la professeure Elizabeth Blood. For reasons of preservation, French Institute collection materials do not circulate; however, non-rare materials are allowed to circulate through the d’Alzon Library or inter-library loan with the director’s permission.
It should be noted that the Institute’s collection includes a number of Franco-American newspapers from the New England region. Most consist of bound copies and nearly all have been microfilmed. To preserve the bound volumes, the Institute encourages scholars to consult the microfilm copies whenever they are available, for example, at the American Antiquarian Society or the Boston Public Library.
